Emotional Intelligence Starts With You

The most important conversation you’ll have today might actually be with yourself.

One of the most common things I hear in coaching is this:

“I just wish they understood where I was coming from.”

Sometimes it’s a leader talking about their team. Sometimes it’s a husband and wife sitting across from one another. Sometimes it’s a parent, an executive, or a friend.

The relationship changes. The challenge doesn’t.

We all want to be understood.

But here’s what I’ve learned after thousands of coaching conversations:

The quality of our relationships rarely exceeds the quality of our self-awareness.

If we don’t understand what we’re feeling, we can’t expect someone else to understand it either. That is where emotional intelligence begins.

Not with communication.

Not with conflict.

Not with influence.

It begins with awareness.

We Often Skip the Most Important Step

Recently, I was coaching a couple navigating a significant life decision.

One person wanted certainty. The other wanted more time to think.

Neither person was wrong.

Yet both left conversations feeling unheard.

As we slowed the conversation down, something became obvious. Neither person was actually talking about the emotion underneath the disagreement.

One was talking about protecting freedom.

The other was talking about protecting trust.

Those are two very different conversations.

Most conflict isn’t caused by the issue itself. It’s caused by the emotion underneath the issue that never gets named.

“I’m Fine” Isn’t an Emotion

Many of us grew up with a limited emotional vocabulary.

Happy.

Sad.

Angry.

Stressed.

Fine.

But human emotion is much richer than that.

The Emotion Check-In tool helps people pause long enough to identify what they’re actually experiencing. Instead of stopping at “I’m frustrated,” it invites us to ask:

  • What happened that brought up this feeling?

  • Where do I notice this emotion in my body?

  • What is this emotion trying to tell me?

  • What do I need most right now?

  • What is one healthy next step I can take?

That level of awareness changes everything.

Because once we can name it, we can own it.

And once we own it, we have choices.

…and continue in that same rhythm.

Try this: Before your next difficult conversation, spend two minutes completing this exercise. You may be surprised by what you’re actually feeling.

Once we understand what’s happening inside of us, we’re far better equipped to understand what’s happening inside someone else.

A Coaching Tool I Use with Clients

Rather than jumping to advice or solutions, practice moving through empathy before curiosity. The strongest conversations don’t begin with fixing. They begin with helping another person feel seen.

You don’t have to become emotionally perfect.

You simply need to become emotionally aware.

Awareness creates choice.

Choice creates change.

Because emotional intelligence doesn’t begin with understanding someone else.

It begins with understanding yourself.

And when you do, your conversations change.

Your leadership changes.

Your relationships change.

Not because you’ve learned a new communication technique.

But because you’ve become a safer person to communicate with.

Growth begins with awareness. Connection grows through curiosity. And the strongest relationships, whether at home or at work, are built one intentional conversation at a time.

Whether you’re leading a team, navigating a relationship, or simply trying to become more intentional in how you show up each day, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Coaching creates space to slow down, think differently, gain perspective, and intentionally choose how you want to show up in your work, your relationships, and your life.

If you’re ready for that next step, I’d love to hear your story. Schedule your complimentary Discovery Call.

Stay Connected. Create Alignment. Move Growth.

Because meaningful change doesn’t happen in a single breakthrough.

It happens one intentional conversation at a time.
